Jim & Sally at American River

Jim Tilley and Sally Kurtz on the banks of the American River,
where gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in 1849, six weeks
after thias territory was ceded to the US by Mexico.
Jim is recovering from some exciting minor surgery, and should be out
panning for gold soon. This won't slow him down.

Foolin around in Fiji...

After looking through the recent blog, couldn't help but respond to BT's fishing trip with some pics of our recent dive trip to Fiji. Hard to reconcile with our current five days per week of skiing, but we'll do our best. Glad you had such a great time in Alabama.

Greetings

Hello everyone! Great work on the blog Murph - your keeping current jingles makes it all seem very up-to-date. I agree with BT's message a few fish and birds back - we need to encourage more players into the blogging game! I can already hear the computers booting up!

Another Army-Navy football game is in the books - we're getting closer, but still a year or two away!

Enjoy the many blessings of the season. Ask Santa for tickets to New Orleans in October.

50th Reunion

Our Sacramento based West Point Society of Northern California had its annual summer picnic yesterday. There were four members of the Class of 1956 there - three had been back to West Point in May for their 50th reunion. All six of them - grads and spouses, spoke of having had a wonderful time! Other classes were also holding reunions - they said that 1946 was in front of them at the parade, as were others. The oldest class present was 1931 - my math says that it was their 75th. We are still young after all!!!!

Never too early to be planning -late May of 2008. It's not too early to start calling or emailing your roommates to make certain they plan to be there! Unless our good Lord intervenes, I will be there!

Beat Navy!

Good Work Murphy and Kelly

Bill and Mary Alice - you did a wonderful job with the pictures!!! I have enjoyed re-living (if that's a word?) the three great events of the Memorial Service weekend.

Also, thanks to you both for carrying the D-2 guidon in Savannah. An aside to Swede Olson who is watching us from on high - "see what happens when you turn the hallowed banner over to the rest of us!!" If you are wondering what I'm writing about, Swede was the D-2 guidon carrier / flag bearer our first class year!

Golf Shirts

Golf shirts were a hit at the Willis' in the DC Mini.

Am placing a supplemental order for Ed Ofgant, Don Williams and Nancy Gillette. Send me an email if you need another.

BT Miller got one in infantry blue, so we can take orders for colors other than black, if ordered.

Looking forward to the next ocation when we can show our D02 colors.

Mouse Pads

You will recall that some time ago I had some mouse pads made that featured the "old geezer" version of the D-2 beer mug decal. Since the minimum order number was 50, I still have several left.

As I look down at the pad I'm usuing, it has a couple of coffee stains and it has already been scrubbed within an inch of its life.

The message - if any of you would like a new mouse pad, just send me an email and I'll send one to you or bring it to Washington next week. ruud@starband.net

Memorial service draws nigh - see those of you who can attend very soon.

Explanation

When I did a message blog the first time, it appeared not to publish. I thought I had started anew - thus the second message was born. When I sent it off to the world, it somehow gathered up the first message so two were published. Such is life! Better two than zero???

Congratulations

Some time ago when Bill introduced the D-2 web site and then the blog, he kicked off a "name the plebe" contest. The challenge was to look at the 29 frightened D-2 plebes in 1954 and name them. The first to do so would receive a prize.

And the winner is???? Clark Bailey. A D-2 logoed golf shirt will be awarded to Clark at an appropriate ceremony during the memorial service weekend festivities. Congratulations Clark!

The picture has now been moved to the permanent gallery.

See you all at Gillettes' on Friday night!

Congratulations Clark!

Several weeks ago when Bill Murphy created the D-2 blog, he teased our participation by holding the "Name the plebes" contest. The first to correctly identify all 29 1954 D-2 plebes would receive a golf shirt with D-2 logo! The picture will now be displayed as a photograph on the web site.

You guessed it - Clark Bailey was the "firstest with the mostest" to quote Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Congratulations - the shirt will be presented at an appropriate ceremony during the upcoming Washington DC memorial service weekend.

Remember the plan - it kicks off as we all descend on Bill and Nancy Gillette on Friday night, May 19 - see you there!

Good work!

Way to go BT - enjoyed the pictures, even though I confess to having seen them before.

I see one way of enjoying the "bloggosphere" is to share some classmate reminiscences - both within the company and the class in general.

In that spirit - toward the end of our graduation leave back in late July of 1958, Burt Miller, Don Welch and I met in the Washington DC area with the plan of driving as a convoy toward Georgia and our first assignments. We were heading for primary flight training - Don to Bainbridge and BT and I to Spence. I remember that we stopped for the night in Columbia, South Carolina. The next day we continued our drive together until the roads parted and Don went one direction and BT and I the other. Spence AB was in Moultrie, Georgia - the SW corner of the state where the southern belles were as beautiful as the gnats were bad. We worked our way through the T-34 and then the T-28 as one of the last classes to fly these reliable prop training aircraft. My memory tells me that Don flew the T-37 jet trainer at Bainbridge.

These six months at Moultrie surely built upon the D-2 bonds that Burt and I already enjoyed and contributed to the closeness we have enjoyed for the past 48 years! The only other 58 grad at Spence was Bill Kelley who we enjoyed seeing recently at the San Francisco mini.

I know that we drove up to the Army-Navy game that fall - taking along some of our flight school friends. I don't remember who won the game although I fear that Navy may have stolen one that year! I do remember that the weather was terrible!

More stories to follow - please join me in the fun!

blog definition

Man is it tough to hold a fish at arm’s length!

Paul asked me where the name “blog” came from. I didn’t much like the name, I think because I fell into a cranberry “bog” as a child and almost drowned.

After some minor sleuthing, I found out it comes from a shortene3ing of “web log”. When first invented in 19995, “web logs” were more or less personal diaries published on the Internet.

Since then they have become a popular way of communication.
